Anyone else having this problem see solution from DCF II - it actually works
- THANK GOD AT LAST !!

Subject: installing the KB929729 security update for Microsoft .Net framewo
7/15/2007 12:16 PM PST

By: DCF II In: microsoft.public.windowsupdate

Thanks to microsoft tech support and tech support porfessional Neo for this
fix

The issue can be caused by a damaged .NET Framework component. At this time,
let's refer to the following steps to troubleshoot this issue:
Note: if any steps below have been tried, I suggest performing it as below
again, cause any change can make a different result.

Step 1: Download Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp utility
============================================
1. Visit:
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...BD/msicuu2.exe
2. Save the file to your Desktop
3. Please double click the file msicuu2.exe on the Desktop to install this
tool on your computer.

Step 2: Remove .NET Framework 1.1
========================
1. Click Start -> All Programs->Windows Installer Clean Up.
2. See if you can find .NET Framework software. If so, remove it.
3. Restart the computer

Step 3: Install .NET Framework 1.1 Redistributable Package and .NET
Framework 1.1 SP1
================================================== ===
1. Please download the Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable
Package and the updates from the following link and save them to the C drive
(C:\)
(You can save them to the C drive, but I just prefer to click Run)

1.)Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Packag
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...6/dotnetfx.exe

2.) Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...867460-X86.exe

3.)Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1
(KB928366
http://www.download.windowsupdate.co...d81a178b15.exe

Once you finish installing these updates, restart your computer. Then
install the failed KB929729 update from the automatic update window. The
update will install successfully and the problem will be fixed

pulling out what little hair I've got left

I also cannot fine the .net in the Windows Cleanup utility.
Did find it, however, listed in the Control Panel but when I tried to
uninstall it I got a message stating that this application (uninstall) can
only be used on an installed program. now that is just weird as how can a
program be listed in the Control Panel and not be installed-any help would be
appreciated.

Thank you Dianne for passing on this solution which worked for my Vista Home
Premium system. A previous "solution" suggested by another tech support guy,
by the name of Santosh which involved disabling McAfee or going into DOS and
after stopping WUAUSERV, clearing out the software distributions fold, then
restarting. I did try this but got nowhere as the DOS route gave me a system
5 error, whatever that is. Now I can get down to some real work. Thanks again.
