I tried to apply this update alongside all the other Tuesday updates but it
failed with Error Code: 0x80070643

I have tried to install it again with the same results.

Does anyone know what the problem is?

Thanks for the guidance.

It looks as though KB article 903772 is close to the symptoms.

WindowsUpdate.log has the following lines in it

2006-07-12 11:16:49 3532 fac Handler : MSI transaction completed. MSI:
0x80070643, Handler: 0x8024200b, Source: No, Reboot: 0
2006-07-12 11:16:49 3532 fac Handler : WARNING: First failure for update
{EABB9B5B-CEDD-409D-834D-243D78D2BE3A}, transaction error = 0x8024200b, MSI
result = 0x80070643, MSI action = StartCache
2006-07-12 11:16:49 3532 fac Handler : WARNING: Operation failed at update
0, Exit code = 0x8024200B

I have checked that ose.exe is not disabled and I have replaced ose.exe from
the distribution CD but the update installation still fails.

Do I really have to reinstall the whole of Office as suggested in the KB
article?

I have two lug-ins installed in my Office set-up:
Avery labels wizard and an SMS messaging Outlook plug-in from Vodafone.

Could these be part of the problem?

Are you able to temporarily disable the plugins and see if that helps?

You may be able to downloand and install the full file:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
office2003-KB917151-FullFile-ENU.exe

If not you may have to reinstall office as suggested.

Hi Peter,

those problems bugged me as well. In the event log you can see which product
is causing you the problem. In my case it was frontpage 2003. Just out of
desperation I tried to run a repair on it, from the "help" dropdown menu, and
it failed. I did a repair from the installation CD, and after that I could
apply the fix w/o problems. Give it a try!

I had the same problem with another Office hotfix too ... the errors there
were caused by Onenote and Project 2003. Same procedure as above fixed it.

best regards
Lars
