According to my history, I installed KB891711 on March 8, 2005. Microsoft
sent a new critical update message about an update to KB891711 - version 2
dated April 12. When I tiried to install it my computer would not reboot
normally. I had to reboot in Safe Mode and disable the update. I removed it
entirely and tried again with no luck. Now I keep getting critical update
messages, but I can't install the critical update.

Uncle_Bob,

Did the previous release of KB891711 cause any issue ? Have found that
the latest release is installed whether the previous one did or did not
cause an issue. That should *NOT* be occurring.

AFAIK, the updated patch is exactly that - and will update an existing
patch. There's no 'opt-out' mechanism involved.

I did not trace any issues to the previous release, but I don't know how to
check if it really installed. The history shows it, but the history also
shows the new one installed twice and I know I removed it both times.

Roxy_say's I downloaded this KB891711.exe on 4/16/05 and later that night I
did a systems check and Dr. Watson snaphot advised me that this file may
interfe with my task bar and is has altered my Windows system. So this
morning I went to control panal to see if this file was in there and it was
not , and then I went to msconfig to see if it was in my start up under the
advanced tab and it was. I unchecked the box, rebooted my system and took
another Dr.Watson snapshot and now it's saying: Microsoft Windows Socket 2.0
Service Provider has altered Windows.
Module Name: MSAFD.DLL
Discription: Microsoft Windows Socket 2.0 Service Provider
Version: 4.10.1998
Product: Microsoft(R) Operating System
I dont know what to do- how to solve this Issue or if I should try to remove
this file ?

Roxy:
Suggest you cease using Dr Watson. KB891711 was re-released by MS on April 12, 2005. If you got it then or later, and it installed ok, it's the good one you'd want to stay with.

Go back to MSCONFIG & re-enable it. And hopefully you won't have it listed twice in there. 891711 will be running as a Win98 service.

There are reports that older versions of ZoneAlarm firewall may hiccup after this update.
What firewall are you using & its version # ?
What antivirus are you using?
