I ran a vulnerability scan of my Windows 98SE based system on my Zero Spyware
2005 software. The scan alerted me to a security update for the Windows
Desktop to address the problem of incorrectly removed programs that might
allow attackers to run malicious codes on an unchecked buffer and damage
files and folders stored. When I clicked on the Microsoft update link to
download the recommended update I could not find the respective update. The
Microsoft update site tells me that there are no critical updates for my
operating system at this time. I reviewed the other non-critical updates for
Windows 98 and 98SE and could not find any relevant information either. Can
anybody help? Thank you!

Maybe this one, but contact them.
You probably already have it if WU says you are ok.

By any chance, while at Windows Update, did you notice the message that
reads; Win Updates are only provided only for XP SP1 and XP SP2? Previous
Windows Versions no longer receive Automatic Critical Up Dates. Too many
security issues secondary to hackers, especially knocking the Boot Cluster
out of Win 98.

Thanks Mae,

before I apply the update according to the link you provided I will contact
FBM software, the publishers of Zero Spyware and run this by them. I will
let you know how I left off with them.

Regards,

Veit

You're welcome.
You could look in your history for Windows Update.
See if it failed.
When I reinstalled 98se, WU installed it.
