Security Update for Windows Media Player 6.4 (KB925398) - Question about the Correct Version

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 Computer with Windows XP Pro (SP2). After
accessing the windows update web site this afternoon, it indicated that my
computer needed the following update: Security Update for Windows Media
Player 6.4 (KB925398).

I am confused about this update since the version of window media player on
my computer is 9.00.00.3349. I am also confused after looking at the
"details" for this update. Some of the applicable information is listed
below:

a. The first web page for the "details," had Microsoft Security
Bulletin MS06-078 (KB923689) as the subject title. I noticed that this KB
did not match the KB in the initial security update listed as needed by the
Microsoft Update web site. Confusing at best??!!

b. Microsoft Windows Media Format 7.1 through 9.5 Series Runtime on the
following operating system versions (it does list a download for windows XP
Service Pack 2)

c. Microsoft Windows Media Player 6.4 (it does list a download for
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2)

Why is the title for the security update download given as Windows Media
Player 6.4, yet the version of the Windows Media Player on my computer is
9.00.00.3349. So which security update do I download, version 9.0 or 6.4??
Any guidance and/or clarification about the correct security update for my
computer would be very much appreciated, Sam.

You need it. The WMP v6.4 is still on your system.

But there's still WMP 6.4 on your machine. It's the mplayer2.exe located
in the \Program Files\Windows Media Player folder. Your system therefore
*needs* to apply the security update for WMP 6.4 too.

Well there's a series of security updates for the varity of the
circumstances the system is affected by the vulnerablities mentioned
in the Security Bulletin. Otherwise MS may have needed to release
a Security Bulletin for each update.

Both.

Use the Windows/Microsoft/Auto Update mechanism and don't bother.

I did not realize that I have two WMPs on my computer, ver 9.0 and 6.4.
Should I uninstall ver 6.4, and if so, how would I uninstall this program?

P.S. I may use the Windows/Microsoft/Auto Update mechanism for this
particular update as suggested. The only reason for my reluctance is that
in the past, I use to have a lot of security update problems when using the
auto update feature. Since I have been manually downloading the security
update files, disconnecting from the internet, and shutting down ZAPRO and
Norton Antivirus, I have not had any recent update install problems.

You most likely would/will have the same expirience with Auto/Windows
Update *if* you keep your sensfull habitate. OTH, ZA and NAV are the
two top protagonists when it comes to problems with updates and even
running Windows. I'ld recommend to uninstall ZA and use the Windows
"firewall" instead *and* uninstall *all* Yellow Box software anyway
(it may be pure chance, but Symantec and ZoneLabs software are using
yellow boxes and both of them aren't much more compatible than to
themselfes).

I got the update to WMP 6.4 by downloading it to my computer, and then
running it. You shouldn't have to use auto-anything. Like you, I
download the full updates, disconnect from internet, close out
antivirus and firewall, make a restore point, appy update and PRAY!

I do not like Windows Firewall as it does not guard OUTGOING
information. I use Zone Alarm.

What makes you think you can't get the 6.4 update via download?

You should not, but in case you don't know what updates your system
needs, it's one of the less worst ideas.

Why are you installing software you don't trust? Otherwise you
don't need that snakeoil which *seems* to control outgoing
connections. And yes, it's more or less easy to fool personal
firewall software.
