Installation Failure -

Error Code: 0x8007F06B

Could anyone provide information as to why this update will not install on
my system? I am running XP SP3 (MCE).

Thanks!

This has been posted numerous times in last day or two. One post-er stated
confirmed an MS engineer/colleagues are aware of this happening, and
(supposedly) are working on it.

Keep looking for news & hopefully it will turn up as an MS update patch.

This appears to be a bug in the Windows Update detection logic. KB899589
should not be needed if WinXP SP3 was installed properly.

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3. Go to Windows Update website > Select CUSTOM and allow the scan to
complete > Uncheck/deselect KB899589 and hide it ("Don't show me this update
again").

4. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)

Hi. Thank you for your response.

I followed your instructions.

However, the update is "hidden" rather than totally unlisted.

The message at the top of the (MS Update) screen says:

Important!

You've hidden important updates
You've asked us not to show you one or more high-priority updates but your
computer might be at risk until they are installed. Restore them now.

Is there going to be a fix to not let it come up at all, rather than just
hiding it?

I gave you instructions on how to hide it, not "unlist" it. WYSIWYG.

Hopefully MS will correct the bug shortly. If you want to contact MS about
it...

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB899589) and
that you're running WinXP SP3.

Setup has detected that the Service Pack version of this system is newer than the update
you are applying. There is no need to install this update.
