Security Update for Windows XP (KB908531)-verclsid.exe

When I install this update-right clicking on desktop causes the constant egg
timer.
If I stop verclsid.exe running all is OK.

Any suggestions

thanks folks, for the benefit of others I can attest to the fact that
following these procedures worked well. Another problem I had was that I was
unable to add a picture to FrontPage 2003, receiving the same lockup. I also
had the problem with Win Explorer 'Send To' causing a freeze-up. Both are
fixed; thanks. I'd tried several restores but, of course, was unable to
restore to a point prior to the major update we received.

Take a look at this from Microsoft. It fixed my problem with IE6 hanging up.

Non of fixes work on this HP free machine--so I have removed the update.

No Kerio --It was removed many moons ago (uninstalled).
When and if I find a solution the group will be the first to know.

I strongly suspect the problems with this patch are much wider than
those listed in the article. I have Kerio PF (but not hpgs2wnd.exe)
and the offending file - verclsid.exe - has all the permissions (via
Kerio) it requires and I still experience a hanging hour glass when
right clicking on the desktop (the hanging is relatively trivial in my
case and seems to disappear of itself in under one minute).
Uninstalling the inadequately tested security fix solves the problem
(the only one created by this security fix here).

I wonder if any other company would continue to make available a
security patch that creates problems for a wide range of users ranging
from the trivial to the severe?

I too have the same problem. I modified the registry and the address bar
works fine but right clicking the desktop freezes until verclsid.exe is
stopped from task manager. I cant uninstall HP share to web program. It
doesn't show up in add or remove programs and I cant right click to see
properties of the desktop icon.

Please do state your Windows version ! If you have the HP software (as cited my MS http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165), be extremely aware that the registry tweak for Win2000 is DIFFERENT from the one for Win XP or later o.s.

Also, see if you have Nvidia Desktop software, or Nvidia graphics card.
