Security updates and external moniter

I have a Dell laptop with Windows XP, that I connect to a full-size keyboard,
mouse and monitor when I am at my desk. When I install the Security updates
dated 10/13 or after, my desktop monitor no longer works properly. The
keyboard, mouse, etc. still work. If I do a system reset prior to that date,
everything works fine.

When I say that the monitor doesn't work, the desktop picture is there,
oversized but nothing else.

Any ideas, anyone?

Are the updates you're installing ALL Security updates or is there a
Video Adapter update that's snuck into the mix, Emma's Mom ?

If none of the updates were for a Video Adapter, would you please
reinstall all of the Security updates except for KB896668 to see if that
one is causing the issue.
