Security Updates corrupt IE and give rstrui.exe error

Running XP on my home computer. It has added several security updates
recently and told me I need to restart the computer.
Updates added, KB923564, KB956572, KB961373, KB959426, KB952004, KB960803.

After starting back up when clicking the IE icon it creates a shortcut on
the desktop. Also can't access it through the exe file in Program files.

Also getting a rstrui.exe error.
Something like "C:\windows\system32\IEfram.dll is not a valid windows image."

Twice I have restored the system in safe mode to an earlier date and
everything works fine again.
Any help would be great!

Thank you

[Crosspost to IE General]

Is "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Vista (KB963027)"
listed in Installed Updates? If it is, what's the Installed date?

According to your recent thread in IE Beta newsgroup, you installed IE8 on
your Vista SP1 machine on 21 April and then uninstalled it earlier today (23
April).

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed and/or uninstalled IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Do NOT use System Restore to "undo" one or more updates, uninstall the
update instead. Having used System Restore might have made things worse
now.

Thanks for the response.

I didn't post on the IE beta newsgroup, must be somebody else. Also have
never installed IE 8.

I did see that KB963027 was installed on 4-22 for IE. Same date as the
security updates.
All updates are set on automatic so I don't actively go look for them.

Finally I am running Norton Antivirus on my machine. Used to have a third
party firewall installed but removed it several months ago.

I do have Ad-Aware on the machine but it was not running at the time.

Thank you for your time.

So the following wasn't your post/thread? =>
http://www.microsoft.com/communities...&cr=&sloc=&p=1

[I note now that that BillK was posting about a Vista SP1 machine.]

If you feel that one or more of those updates (i.e., KB963027, KB923564,
KB956572, KB961373, KB959426, KB952004, KB960803) caused the behavior, you
can...

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada (24/7) or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB999999).

LOOK! => If your problem relates to a Cumulative Security Update for IE
(e.g., KB963027), call the above number and ask to be transferred to the
"Consumer IE queue" (which is 47830).

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

KB963027 is not offered to WinXP machines with IE8 installed.
