Turn off/disable Norton System Doctor when you're doing updates IF
it's the wininit.ini file that is the issue.
IMHO, NSW and Win ME are NOT compatible . Check the Windows ME
General and Software newsgroups to see all the posts concerning
issues with NSW and Win ME.

Click the Windows link in the left frame to view the Win ME NG's.
Here's hoping that the wininit.ini file is the issue and that NSW
has not damaged the system restore hierarchy. Try the suggested
resolution in the MSKB article from the link that was included
previously.
