Have a typical home net, DSL modem and wireless router.

But, i cannot see either computer's files from the other computer.

Can somebody point me to a "cookbook" listing of steps to take so that each
computer can see the C drive of the other?

Heres whats happening now:
On the Vista computer, in the Explorer, i do see the XP PC listed, but the
only thing that appears is "Printers". How can i get the Vista computer to
also see the C Drive of the XP PC?

On the XP PC, in the Explorer, i do see the Vista PC, but when i select it
in the Explorer (left pane), in the right pane, where i would expect the
contents of the selected item to appear, it is blank (no error, just blank,
no objects such as the C drive appear).

Thanks,
tom

There are a number of steps to make this happen for you. The "help" utility
is very good in this regard to get you there. Try looking for "file
sharing" and you will get a step by step list. ...Bob F.

You will need to share the folders you want visible on networked machines.
Right-click/share or right-click/sharing and security. Sharing the root
directory C:\ is ill-advised.

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.
How to give Permissions are there, too.
If you are running Norton, etc’s Firewall, check its settings.

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be
asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer
from an XP computer.

Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer sharing Wizard.
