I see MS doesn't give up trying to force IE7 on us

I have long resisted going to IE7 by checking on the "don't remind
me again" box in auto update. But, it seems that Redmond is on yet
another push, like it periodically does on O/S SPs. So, I had to
whack them again.

That said, I am curious as to people's views of the TRUE plusses
and minuses of IE6 and IE7. My own reasons stem from not wanting
the GUI drastically changed, not wanting more of the code coming
from the web (which I think is true but may not be), and I've seen
no features in IE7 that make it a killer app.

But, since this is an update NG and not an IE NG, how can I STOP MS
from periodically bugging me about IE7? I have my auto update set
to "notify but do not download" so that I don't get blindsided in
the middle of the night by an update that take my system down, but
I am fearful that MS will find some way of slipping IE7 past me.

Thanks.

I don't have IE7 on MANY of the machines I manage/use... I have not seen
anything other than the "you have hidden updates" if/when I visit the
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ web site. All I did was check the box
there (on the web page - not to show that update) and I have not seen it in
the updates since - even on the machines that I have Automatic Updates
turned on at various settings. Something may be awry with your system.

It didn't take as much getting used to as I thought it would - I switch
between it a few times a day depending on what computer I am sitting at.
Withthe tabs - it sometimes feels more like Firefox to me - which I use just
as much. As far as it being a 'killer app' - it's not like the new versions
of these applications are going to stop and sooner or later there won't be
plugins that work for the older versions. I'm sure it is actually quite
difficult to effectively surf all pages on Windows 95 at this point - as
many pages only accept certain versions of Flash, Shockwave, etc - but with
that older version of IE/OS - you cannot install the latest version(s). I
have even seen that with just OSes - like Windows ME - Quicktime is
definitely limiting in that way.

It's a personal choice. It works for me either way right now - some people
love the look/feel and others hate it and some let it grow on them and I am
sure there are some out there already who never used previous versions, so
they think it is just fine... ;-)

I was never impressed with IE7 in general, so I'm just staying with IE6 for now.

Others may offer alternate solutions to block the update, but I found this to be
the easiest and most positive method for myself, my family, a few friends, and
some neighbors.

Here's the link for the Internet Explorer 7 Blocker Toolkit offered by
Microsoft:

I'm a big believer in not trying to fix things that aren't known
to be broken. Usually, that philosophy saves me pain anywhere in
my life. However, taking that rigid of a stand can also result in
a lost opportunity IF the new mousetrap does turn out to be a
better mousetrap. That said, I am especially wary of ANYTHING new
coming from MS because from what I read in various NGs just
lurking, there is a LOT of controversy over what is or is not a
"good" update to Windows or even IE.

Thanks for your excellent observations.

Thanks, I'll store this for future reference if/when I get overly
annoyed again. As long as it is only a very occasional "gentle
reminder", I just click "thanks, but no thanks" and move on with my
life. I thought I'd ask about this anyway, just in case
"occasionally" gets to be "daily".

Same behavior witnessed here. The reason IE7 was reoffered is that this
is the latest release of it. So, I hid it again.
What would be nice would be for MS to communicate that another build of
IE7 is coming out soon and that it will be detected by AU regardless of
whether one has Hidden it or not.
Is that too much to ask ? <w>

I didn't catch that. Is this version of IE7 a noticeable
improvement over whatever it is that people allege is bad about
it? I worded my question that way because I've not been able to
get a clear consensus in my mind as to whether it is or is not
better than IE6 in some way I might find useful. So, my fallback
position is not to take the risk and have to try to roll my
system back or uninstall it.

One of the BIG problems I have in general about MS updates is
that it is virtually impossible for me to figure out from the
meager description the update system offers what the problem is
so I can make a judgement as to whether I'm even affected, plus I
cannot easily find out if there's any side effect problems. So,
to avoid a self-inflicted wound, I install NO updates without
lurking in these several MS NGs looking for what the early
updaters are seeing.

So, you make a good point in saying that MS did a major upgrade
and people should strongly consider going to IE7 now, or people
like me, to re-consider my decision to avoid it. But, I sure
didn't catch that in the description!

My thanks to you for the info. BTW, sometimes I try to find out
what is in the MS KB based on the update number but still fail to
truly understand what the advantage(s) is/are and what the
security vulnerability(s) might be, AND what MS's known problems.

This is the article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940767
WGA is no longer required to install.
You have been informed how to hide.

I have used it for the last year- no problems, like the GUI changes, prefer
it over IE
