I just started using Vista and when I go to make a new word document, it
won't let me and says the selection is locked. I tried the protect document
tab, but that gets me no where. Help!!

You are probably using a trial version of Word, and it has expired.
Word is part of Microsoft Office, not part of Vista.
Try typing 'activate' into Word help for more info.

Thanks. If Office was loaded with my new computer should I have to activate
it? I'm not sure how to do this. I don't think I have the appropriate
product codes they require--but I did buy the program, it's not taken from
elsewhere.

If it came loaded on your computer as trialware, you would have to
pay for it to get it activated.

If you indeed paid for it and it was pre-loaded on your machine, you
would have also have been provided with the installation disc and the
product key.

You need to find that.

Have a look in the CD cases that came with your computer.
If it is a Dell, you have to activate Office by putting in the Office(NOT
the Vista one!)
Product Key, which will be on the Office CD case, or the Office CD.

You need to be sure about what you have paid for when you bought your computer.
You may have only paid for Vista, the operating system, and Office maybe just a time-limited
trial version installed by the seller.
As Mick and Nonny have said , there may be disks with the key amongst the packaging.
If you are not sure what you have, contact the people who sold you your computer.

I have the hard copy Office Home and Student 2007 disks. I've written
another thread as I saw someone solved this problem by uninstalling the
Microsoft office on their desktop, then reinstalled from the disk. I tried
this, but the "system administrator" won't let me uninstall. It seems like
everything is frozen when I try to hit activate in word, etc.

Yes, I was expecting you would come back with another problem.

You have now found some disks - surprise, surprise.

You still don't seem to know where this version of Word came from:

If you bought it you must know who loaded it onto your 'new computer'.
And if you bought it you would have the product key.

Now you are hitting 'Activate' and "everything is frozen "

I thought you were trying to uninstall it.

You seem to me to be beyond help. Bye.

Dave,

Thanks for the effort. I was also working with computer guru who couldn't
figure out why I couldn't uninstall the temp Office. I wasn't able to do
very many things (i.e., go to support and help, create another user account)
even though I am the 'system administrator'. Some how I was able to create
another user account and when I tried to uninstall from the user account, it
asked for my system administrator password. After entering the password, I
was able to uninstall Office. I then installed it from the disk and
everything works perfectly now. Thanks to the "discussion group", I was able
to realize that the selection was locked due to a temp Office installed with
the new computer. Long story short. It's fixed. Thanks for your help, but
I feel your mannerism in the end was a bit harsh. How am I suppposed to know
that when I order a new computer with Microsoft Office that they put on a
temp copy that I need to unistall and then install the disks that came with
the computer. I assumed that when I ordered the computer, Dell installed
everything on it that I ordered.

If your intention is to perform a clean reinstall of Office you should not
bother with activation, but uninstall it right away via Control Panel >
Programs.

Next, reinstall the software by inserting the Office disk in the drive.
Double-click the setup.exe file if the installation program does not start
automatically. During the installation procedure you will be prompted for a
valid product key. Now is the time to enter it.

Your product key can be found either on a label on the box the Office disk
came in, or on a Certificate provided by the OEM (retailer). If you do not
own a valid Office product key, visit:
