selective connection problems

I am unable to connect to the internet through itunes and firefox.
Previously I had been able to use both these programs without trouble. I am
running vista on an hp pavillion

About five days ago (after installing a series of Vista updates) I lost my
connectivity through IEv7. I changed to firefox and had no trouble for about
a day, then that failed also. I noticed about that time that itunes was
unable to connect to the online store.

I went back and uninstalled the recent updates and now I am able to connect
via explorer but not via FF or itunes. interestingly when I startup in safe
mode everything works.

help would be very welcome

Have you installed any applications recently that might have affected your
Internet Connectivity?

no, my last program install prior to the trouble was two weeks earlier.

one other piece of info that I didn't include earlier--my google desktop and
Southwest Air notifier both seem to connect fine.
