Semi-OT: Physical Orientation Of Drives On Server?

I'm thinking about moving my Windows Home Server to one of these:
http://tinyurl.com/l9cv5r - namely a rack-mount case with 20
hot-swappable bays.

The hitch is that the thing is *really* deep - like almost 26" -
and my closet isn't that big.

If I could turn it on it's side it would fit. Likewise, if I set
it back-down-bays-up (with some spacers for air flow) it would
fit.

But would that constitute cruel and unusual punishment for the
drives?

I'd check the drive manufacturer's web site but it shouldn't matter given
that they mount in many different planes depending on the pc maker.
