Thanks for this. Adding the file path for msoe.dll to the registry in
pursuance of the advice on
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306098 did the
trick.
I did not run "drive:\program files\outlook express\msimn.exe" /reg, as I
had already run "C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE" /reg with
apparent success, but note with interest the difference and wonder whether it
has any significance.
I was unable to follow the advice in
http://www.oehelp.com/oelnk.aspx. All
I could tell was that 'URL' file extensions were to be opened by internet
explorer, and I was not able to create a new type with the description being
"URL:MailTo Protocol", or to find any 'values' such as "C:\PROGRAM
FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE" /mailurl:%1. I wonder why, unless it is a
consequence of my version of windows, which is xp pro, and I am using IE7.
Somehow, adding the file path for msoe.dll seems to have fixed another
problem that I have had for a long time prior to losing the ability to send a
link or page by email. 'Run' had disappeared from the start menu, and 'run
command' was not shown in the list of start menu items under properties,
customize, advanced. The run command did appear in the classic start menu,
but when I endeavoured to actuate it I got an error message to the effect
that acces was denied me and I should refer to the sytem administrator. This
was puzzling, as I log on as a system administrator. However, a functioning
'run' has returned to both start and classic start menus, which is a mystery
since I see no reason why adding the file path of msoe.dll should be
relevant, and in any case the problem with 'run' preceded that with sending
links/pages by email.
If you can shed any further light, I should be most interested, but in any
case, thanks again - problem solved.
