Greetings Nick,
There's lots of things going on when you send a file. For instance, Messenger tries to send
a thumbnail to the user (the exact same way it sends custom emoticons, voiceclips, etc.).
Until that thumbnail is transmitted to you to your contact, they won't see the request.
There isn't any copying to random locations or redirection of files to random servers though.
This is actually a Windows 'feature'. To turn it off, download and run this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/extfix.reg
You'll then be able to receive MP3s unconstrained.
