Serious performance issues

I am having serious issues with Vista performance and have isolated several
items but need help with others. I have an Athlon64, 2gb ram, Radeon 9600
128mb. One problem I had was Windows Defender. When this runs, it brings my
system to a halt and the quick scan takes about 5 hours. I killed Defender
and have another problem at start up. When I boot the system, it takes over
2 minutes to boot and then I have constant hard drive activity and the
processor usage is 8% to 80% for about 10 minutes. The service that is
causing all this activity is AudioEndPointBuilder. What is this service and
why do I need it?

Solved it myself by using process explorer... I guess there are no Microsoft
experts on these forums because it does not appear anyone from Microsoft is
answering to any of the posts on performance issues. Can't wait for the
launch event next week so I can bring up these serious issues with Vista.
Don't tell me there aren't serious issues -- Google vista performance problem
and you will spend 12 hours looking through the forums.

Okay the answer... it was the SuperFetch service not AudioEndPointBuilder.
When I killed SuperFetch, AudioEndPointBuilder finished its task in less than
20 seconds. SuperFetch process was running 8 to 10 minutes at startup and
consuming 80% of processor. The total disk IO was close to a million reads
and writes. After SuperFetch stopped eating processor, it was still causing
havoc in the background. When I would open more than two or three apps, my
system would just halt for minutes at a time. Obviously this service was
only tested on a limited number of platforms before being incorporated.
Killed the service and used a utility to find all dll(s) associated with
Superfetch. I deleted all DLL(s) and Exe(s) that I could find associated
with this service. My Vista machine is now running smooth. Thanks to all
you Microsoft folks out there for avoiding all the performance issues. I
guess thats why new PC sales have dropped over 30% since the introduction of
Vista --found this on MSN of all places -- Vista is killing manufacturers PC
sales.

Yes it sounds like the good old days. Microsoft people need to
monitor these forums. This is especially true with the release
of a new product. Things had been better for several years, but
looks like they have deteriorated again.

I was going to spring for Vista Premium, but with the stories I
reading here, it will be a while. At least until we see some
real support.
