Serious Problem with MS06-015 Install

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 computer with windows XP Pro (SP2). I
installed MSO6-013 and MS06-014 without any problems. However, MS06-015 was
a major problem. After it was installed, when I right clicked the desktop
(I wanted to click on properties), an hourglass appeared for the mouse
pointer, and I could not accomplish any further computer activity with the
mouse. Fortunately I remembered that you could shut down the computer thru
the task manager. I tried this multiple times and in different profiles and
experienced the same problem.

I went ahead and uninstalled the security update thru the control
panel/add-remove. The uninstall seem to go okay except for a dialog box
that stated, the Setup detected Gear DVD Standard Edition 6.05 and if
KB908531 is removed, this program might not run properly. I went ahead with
the uninstall. I am amazed that this security update has something to do
with my Gear recording program!!

I should mention that I have read the MS article about the HP devices. The
only HP device I have is a HP Deskjet 990cxi and I don't believe that this
type of unit was mentioned in the MS article. If anyone has any suggestions
about this MS Security update, it would be very much appreciated, Sam.

Hello Sam,
Your HP Deskjet "may" have come with some extra HP photo software. Especially if your Deskjet has a card reader.
Take a look at your \Programs folder. See if you have an HP sub-folder. Take a look around.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165

<quote> Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-Web software. There have been reported issues where HP software causes the VERCLSID.EXE process to stop responding. In particular, HP's Share-to-Web Namespace Daemon (Hpgs2wnd.exe) which ships with:
. HP PhotoSmart software
. Any HP DeskJet printer that includes a card reader
. HP Scanners
. Some HP CD-DVD RWs
. HP Cameras

Share-to-Web Namespace Daemon can be found in the "C:\Program Files\hewlett-packard\hp share-to-web\hpgs2wnd.exe" folder.
Share-to-Web is auto-started from both the Startup menu and the Run registry key.

See "Problems in Windows Explorer/ Windows shell due to 908531"

This article has just been updated. Suggest you see if you can get updated software from HP.

Please post back with any questions, and report back on progress.

I had the same problem, although Microsoft is focusng on the HP issue there
is also an issue with graphics cards and the associated programs. I bet you
have an Nvidia graphics card as I do. There is a solution but to my mind not
entirely satisfactoy. You need to get shellex manager, easy to find by a
general search, run it, and turn off nview desktop contex menu. This "solved"
it for me, but I agree nvidia or microsoft need to resolve this. We should be
able to run all "normal" features of programs.

Thanks for the insight.. I have communicated in other threads that even
though I have a HP all-in-one but I donot have the Share-to-web program nor
do I have the
Hpgs2wnd.exe in my system.. Hence the registry patch doesnot work.. I do
have a Nvidia card and I already came across threads saying this is a problem
but just donot know how to turn off the Nview desktop context. I will search
the shellex manager and give it a try. I think the focus on HP is wrong as
there are other programs out there also caused the problem.. MS has to fix
KB908531 otherwise we will have to tweak all other applications which is
wrong !!!!

Hi

I found Shell extensions manager at www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html. It
is a small program, extract/run it, it will take a few seconds and then look
for "nview desktop contex menu". It is in alphabetical order. Right click (if
you can) and click disable, or left click and press F7. F8 switches it back
on. Then restart your pc. If this does not work then I don't know what else
it will. I suspect there are more conflicts out there. I wouldn't randomly
click shell extensions though. Interestinly my pc with an ATI card is fine.
Typically nvidia is silent on the issue. They don't even hold any driver for
my nvidia fx go5200. A major player like nvidia should be all over this and
getting a fix out via windows update fast.

Thanks Dmitry,

I have the same situation as you. I have two desktops of which one is
connected with HP all-in-one and with Nvidia grahpic card and the other one
have ATI but no printer.. Both of them are WIN XP SP2.. The one with ATI card
works fine after the update.. It is the one with HP & Nvidia is having
problem.. As I said, I don't have web-to-share so the registrry patch out
there won''t help. I have downloaded ShellEX and will give it a try tonight
as I am at work right now.. Again, this is not the solution as we are
disabling functions for certain applications to make WIN XP works !!!

Hi Dmitry,
I also have a Nvidia (GeForce4 Ti 4200) and agree with you that this problem
is somehow related to the interface between 'verclsid.exe' and Nvidia
aoftware.
