serious win update problem

Formatted HHD and re-installed xp pro. Installed spybot, winpatrol,
ad-aware, spywareblaster, zonealarm. All of which I had in my last setup.
Tried to install my norton 2005 av (which I also had in my last setup), but
it said that it needed xp sp2, to download all updates properly, then it
would not open and I could not un-install it.

And win updates kept hanging and re-downloading / installing the same single
update, with no error message.

So, I formatted HDD again, installed al the above, except for norton. Then
went on line to get all win updates, including sp2. Using Automatic
Updates - Notify me but don't automatically download or install them.

The download / update process was going fine. Several times it instructed me
to re-boot, which I did. Then it continued downloading / updating. Then
during the install process of some updates, I got a message saying that a
required file is missing. This file would have been copied from
C:Windows/servicepack...... but is missing. Please contact your sys adm or
insert KB 893086 source file now.

One of the downloads being installed was 893086. I searched the ms kb and
found nothing to clue me about my issue. I have explorer to show all sys and
hidden files and as it said that directory c:windows/servicepack.... was not
there. So, I unchecked the 893086 update and it finished installing the
remainder of updates, but on re-boot, all the same updates were listed for
download / install. I let it do so, but it kept showing the same list
everytime. If 893086 was checked I would keep getting that above message.
Finally, I unchecked all except for one update and let it proceed. Upon
re-boot, that one that I checked was no longer listed. So, I just kept
choosing one (unchecking all the others) and proceeding to download /
install. After the third or forth re-boot, I got a message saying that there
was a problem with umpnpmgr.dll and my system would not boot up. I could not
boot into safe mode. I downloaded that dll on a friend's computer and copied
it to c:Windows/system and tried to reboot and got the same message.

I then inserted my xp pro disk and booted to it and chose to repair. It went
well and I was soon (well after about an hour) up again. I turned off auto
updates and deleted all updates from the auto update directory and then
turned it on again, Then went online to update again. Well, on the 2nd or
3rd download / install sequence, I got that same message about the missing
required files. So, I just canceled out. My xp is working fine, but I am not
able to continue downloading / installing xp updates.

During each time that I got a message box I tried to Print-Screen and save
it to a word doc, but Print-Screen was not copying the screen to the
clipboard. This is a secondary issue.

Please help me.
Paul

Clean install XP. Clean up/chkdsk/defrag. Turn on the MS firewall. Go online
and update. Clean up/chkdsk/defrag again. NOW, install your programs and do
another clean up/chkdsk/defrag. Then install your devices like printer, etc.
If that doesn't work, I don't know what to tell you.

any others have ideas that can avoid another install of xp? I'll tell you
why, if you really want to know.

Not sure exactly what is happening on that system, but you may be able
to solve it by manually downloading SP2 and then installing that
offline.

Get SP2 here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Also, download and install these items AFTER installing SP2:

- VB scripting support update:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

- WinHTTP/BITS 2.0:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

- Windows Installer update: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803

- MSXML 3 SP5:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Once you have installed all the above, be sure the AU, BITS, and Event
Log services are set to Automatic. Then give Windows Update another
shot.

Thanks.

I turned off auto update. Re-booted, downloaded sp2 (9 hours). Logged off
the internet for several hours. Then logged back on and read all those ms
pages about sp2. Checked my sis for ad-spy ware. Re-booted, then tried to
install sp2 and got WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe is not a valid win32
application.

I did a chkdisk and defrag before I downloaded sp2.

Just now while writing this I turned on auto updat again. It just told me
that updates are ready to download. I expect the same ones, right? Well, it
says sp2 is rerady to download, that's all. WTF?

Hi, Paul;

The most common causes for the "not a valid Win32 application" are:

a. the download you have is corrupt or incomplete. This can
sometimes happen if you have an overly-aggressive anti-virus package
that is doing active scanning on the file as it downloads, and that AV
program "hiccups" during the file check. Take a look at the .EXE file
you downloaded. It should be exactly 278,927,592 bytes in size. If
your file is not that size you will need to download again.

b. the download you got was for the 64-bit version of Windows, and
you need the 32-bit version.

If you have checked and neither of the above apply, then I recommend you
follow the installation checklist that is listed here:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm
