Server 2000 - 2003 Migration

I'm looking to migrate the DC for one of out domains from Server 2000 to
Server 2003 SP2. The new Server will also be on different hardware. The
server is the only DC for that domain. What is the best way to migrate the
AD from one machine to the other. I've already tried the steps outlining
transferring the System state from a backup with no luck whatsoever. The new
computer began to say that it had Server 2000 install and wouldn't boot at
all even in directory services restore mode.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Dave, search microsoft for the active directory upgrade guides. The easiest
way will probably be to build the new server with WIndows 2000, join the
domain, promote it to a DC, trasfer all the roles to it and then run through
the process of upgrading the domain and then the server to a 2003 active
directory Domain. There are lots of documents out there detailing the steps.
If you are running Exchange, there more planning to consider.

That wouldn't be practical in out environment. We're no planning on
replacing the old server at all. Rather I want to create a new Domain that
has a copy of all the users from the old one. We've looked at just creating
a trust relationship but we don't want to actually change the users on the
old server either.

You might look into AMDT.

Oh, the word 'Migrate' means something different to me. I guess you could
just create a seperate domain and then use the LDIFDE Utility to export from
one domain and import to the other.

Hello InfiniteRealms,

No, not so easy. With setting up a new domain for migration you need ADMT
and the domain name has to be different then the existing one. I would suggest
to add the new machine as a member server and promote it to DC/DNS/GC, move
all FSMO roles and with robocopy you can copy all data.

Best regards

At first I was looking at the ADMT but ldifde seems to be enough. I've tried
the examples in KB237677. At first it would only export 45 users. I've now
managed to get all the users exported but when importing in the new domain I
get a "Referral" on line 1 Error message and it doesn't create a log file.
Any idea what might be causing this?

Hello Dave C.,

You user settings, password for example, will not be imported to the new
domain. Also machine accounts not. So you have to rejoin all domain computers
and member servers. All your user will need new passwords and they get new
profiles on the computers where they work. The old profiles on there computers
will still exist but i am not sure if they will be accessible for normal
user accounts, only admins can access them and then copy them to the new
created profile.

If you except all this limitations.

Best regards

The new domain isn't a replacement for the other one. It just needs to have
the same users. It won't have the same workstations at all. Would it better
to use the ADMT to get all the passwords as well?

Hello Dave C.,

If you only need the same names and OU's etc. then you can do it this way.
And if you have not so much users password reset after creating the accounts
will be easier and faster then using ADMT.
