Server 2003 - Updates download but fail to install

Hi,

This is very odd, and just started happening today on multiple machines...
It is mostly with Windows Server 2003, but also applies to a Windows XP
box...

Windows Update fails on multiple systems after the update is successfully
downloaded. Here is what happens...

1. I download the updates.

2. I get "Updates were unable to be successfully installed messages".

3. I rerun Windows Update. The updates are missing from the Windows Update
(after I rerun Windows Update).

4. I Have to reboot. After reboot, the updates REAPPEAR in the Windows
Update list. I try to install, and the cycle starts over agiain with #1
above... they are downloaded, but do not install.

On windows XP Professional SP2 box. I got the SAME error as above (updates
failed to install after downloaded), but after the computer restart, they
then show as successfully installed (but how do I know for sure?). However
Security Update for Windows XP (KB917537) keeps showing over and over even
after successful installation. I have reinstalled that one 3 times and it
does not go away.

Interestingly, in the Server 2003 event logs, I get many of the following
error messages all in a row (like 20 or something)...

"The start type of the Background Intelligent Transfer Service service was
changed from auto start to demand start."

Anway, maybe there is a new problem out there with Windows Update...

Solution!!!

I disabled the World Wide Web Publishing service (after reading some notes
in this group), and all the updates completed. I restarted the system and
all is OK!

So, it may have something to do with the ASP.DLL update. It must have been
first on the list and crashed the entire list of updates.

It helped me! Thanks a bunch.

Obviously one failed update should not have stopped the others (that is what
initially threw me off the scent of the problem). But that is exactly what
happened.
