Hi

I have always been a fan of Standard 2003/2008 Domains and not the SBS
version. But SBS2008 keeps coming up here and there. Could anyone please
explain what a company will lose in features/possibilities if chosing
SBS2008 instead of Standard 2008.

- a SBS2008 cannot make a trust to another DC, right?
what else?

is there a whitepaper on how to migrate from Standard 2003 domain to
SBS2008?

Tomppa

Not sure what you mean as you don't set up a trust to a DC regardless. In
SBS you can't set up trusts to other *domains*.
The SBS box must hold all FSMO roles.

However, you can have additional DCs, additional AD sites, etc.

Well -

SBS2008 doesn't run W2008 R2 and you can't upgrade to it (they may release a
new version of SBS for that)
SBS2008 doesn't run Enterprise (but eh ...not a huge deal)
You can't "break out" the bundled bits of SBS, such as Exchange, to run them
on another server (although if you get SBS2008 Standard it comes with a
license to run SQL and a license to run W2008 Std on a separate server).

You do get Exchange 2007 Standard, Remote Web Workplace, and other cool
stuff. I'm a fan. Make sure you have some good robust hardware to run this
on.

There's one for SBS2003 to SBS2008 and you can ignore the SBS2003 bits.

Really, it's pretty easy if you aren't using Exchange already.

I'm setting up my reply to crosspost to the SBS2003 group in case people
have any other suggestions. There's an SBS 2008 group on a different
server - check out www.sbs2008 for info on how to access it.

Hello Tomppa,

The biggest point to keep in mind is that SBS version support only up to
75 users. When you don't need more then 300 you can use EBS version.

You are not able to create a trust to another domain with SBS/EBS versions.
The SBS/EBS must have the 5 FSMO roles but additional DC/GC can be installe
din the domain as in normal Windows versions.

See this as a starting point for regular to SBS domain:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884453

For more details about regular to SBS migration i strongly suggest to use
the SBS forum/newsgroup:
microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs

and here you find some more:
http://www.sbs2008.com/

Please choose them for further question, because SBS/EBS are too different
from the normal Windows versions.

Best regards

Meinolf Weber

Thanks for your answers, have been away for a few days so I havent been able
to reply.

What I mean with trusts to other domains, is the scenario when company A
buys company B and one of them is using SBS.

If I put in another twist, you say that I can´t "break out" the bits of SBS
but can I buy an "break out" upgrade to Standard Windows 20xx in the future?
