Server, Antivirus, or Windows Updates problem?

Over the last few days, I have had difficulty viewing webpages with Internet
Explorer (I use version 7) or polling for messages in Outlook Express
(version 6). During this time I've been in repeated contact with tech
support reps first from my server, then Symantec, and finally it occurred to
me, when their solutions proved to be only temporary, that I might be able to
fix the problem with System Restore. I am using Windows XP. That did fix
the problem . . . until, I realized, that automatic updates had been
downloaded and installed by Windows. I have done the same restore point
again and the problem is fixed again; that is, until the next Windows update.
For now, I have opted to download updates but will not install until I can
get some answers about patches, or otherwise, for this most recent
update(s)--it may be related to KB933360, but I'm not absolutely certain. I
am not particularly computer savvy--just an average user, so I would
appreciate if any suggestions are offered that they can be dumbed-down so
they will be easy for me to follow. Thanks!

Reinstall them one at a time. If the issue reappears after the update
installs and REBOOTING the system, uninstall the culprit from Add/Remove
Programs in the Control Panel.
That way you can determine, specifically, which one is causing this issue.

BTW, which Symandrek product is installed ?

There is one update that has been installed, KB933360. For now, I have
removed it, but I wonder whether it is necessary? Removing the update puts
my system back to a functional state.

I am using Norton Internet Security 2005.

The retail version of Norton can play havoc with your pc!
You may wish to consider uninstalling this apps. and get a refund. There are
better alternatives available.

Even though I think NIS is worthless, there has been another thread in
this newsgroup that involved a Time Zone update installing that caused a
major issue. Can't recall what it was, but uninstalling it also resolved
the issue.
So, if the system is keeping time properly, Hide the update if it's
reoffered by clicking the Automatic Update icon in the Notification
Area, UNcheck the box next to KB933360, click OK, and then put a check
mark in the box next to
" Do not show me these updates again " Click OK
Since it's not a security update/patch/hotfix there is no free support
for this issue.
Feh.

Thank you MowGreen. Can I run another idea by you? I have a VAIO notebook
and spoke with Sony Support rep yesterday through online chat, they suggested
installing the update, then reinstalling Internet Explorer 7. They wouldn't
explain why they thought this would work, but they were fairly confident that
it would. What do you think?

You're mowst welcome. IF IE7 was installed with NIS' RealTime Protection
running, than *anything* is possible. Anything being " not good".

They did recommend uninstalling IE7 first before installing the update
and then reinstalling IE7, correct ? <w>

Thanks very much, once again! And, no, they did not specifically say the
order of uninstalling/reinstalling IE and installing the update, but I
figured it should be as you indicated. Thanks for confirming my guess.
