This server does not support a SSL connection

Just tied to send an e-mail with attachment via WLM using my BT account
accessed through POP3 protocol.

I got the above error message.

Looking in Accounts>BT>Properties>Advanced, Outgoing Mail (SMTP): 587 I see
that "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" is ticked.

I don't remember seeing this error before and I don't remember ticking the
secure connection box.

As it states it "requires" a secure connection, I assume that just unticking
the box will not work.

Help please?

When the server says it doesn't support SSL, you should untick the box
saying it does. Some servers *support* SSL but don't *require* it - in
other words, they will accept both encrypted and unencrypted traffic and
it's the user's choice. BT (i.e. Yahoo) don't even support SSL. Untick the
box and try again.

Am now getting this error message:

The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's
e-mail address. The sender's e-mail address was **********@btinternet.com'.

Subject 'test'
Server Error: 530
Server Response: 530 authentication required - "Your email could not be
sent. To fix this you must make a simple change to your email (known as SMTP
authentication). For advice visit www.btyahoo.com/smtp"
Server: 'mail.btinternet.com'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC78
Protocol: SMTP
Port: 25
Secure(SSL): No

www.btyahoo.com/smtp tells me that authentication IS required.

Have tried it again with port 587 but same result - confusing.

My account is listed as authenticated in BT Yahoo mail.

OK. You're confusing several issues. Authentication means that BT can check
that you are allowed to use their SMTP server - that you are one of their
customers. If you follow the link given, you'll be told to tick the box
marked 'My server requires authentication' on the Servers tab of the
account's properties sheet. This will pass your username and password (the
same ones as when you collect messages from your mailbox) to the server; if
they match those of a BT customer, your message will be accepted. This
authentication process has nothing to do with 'secure' transmission of
messages using SSL, which was your first problem. So tick that box and try
again. Good luck!

Well done that man!!!!

Initially, after ticking "My server requires authentication" in the server
tab, I tried again and got the error message: "This server does not support
a SSL connection".

I then realised that I re-ticked the "Secure connection" in the Advanced
tab. Unticked and applied, re-tried and message was sent.

Thanks very much for your help.
