Hello!
This is my 2nd attempt to find a solution to Server Performance Report and
Server Usage Report being empty. While looking through the newsgroups, I
found at least 10 other postings on this topic without final solution, all
from the last few months. Seems like something broke around SBS2003 SP1.

PLEASE: Read this to the end, because a lot has been tried already. Esp. all
KB-articles etc. won't help here, been there, done that, so I am looking for
some creativity!!

Here is the report I got this morning (well, except fot the Windows SBS2003
logo, which didn't paste into this text, and with some blank lines removed):

So the report simply stays empty. Similar for the usage report, it gives
some lines which look like templates (such as \L# etc.), so also no content.

System is SBS2003, all updates, SP1, did a full reinstall of the system
(erase C:\Program Files and C:\Windows and C:\Inetpub and started from
scratch).

I have also removed Monitoring per instructions, reinstalled, reinstalled
monitoring, reapplied service packs, reinstalled MSDE, done it all again, you
name it. No luck!

BUT: "mssbsssr.exe -perf" does update the performance counters (after
Monitoring reinstall, the counters are not set, as you can see if trying to
change the alert levels, and once mssbsssr is run, the counters are there).
Also, "mssbsssr -C:Server Performance Report" does send the report, I have it
in my email every morning.

There are no error messages in the event log, none in the logs of MSSBSSSR
or on the database access (tried this as well: if I stop the SQL service, I
do get an error message that mssbsssr is not able to connect to the
monitoring database, so looks like it does connect).

I somehow have a suspicion that everything is working, just when mssbsssr
assembles the report, it uses a blank or corrupted template. Just cannot find
the template on the system, and there seems to be no documentation around for
this "mssbsssr.exe" program.

Does anyone have additional insights into the workings of this report
generator? Maybe someone at MS actually knows how it assembles the data and
thus why the reports stay blank, if everything else works? Would greatly
appreciate creative thinking with a solution!!

Hello Hendrik,

Besides your Server Reports, check to see if you can access your Backup
configuration, too (through the SBS management console).

If both aren't working, your problem is likely because somehow a Host Header
was assigned to your loopback address.

Resolution:
Open your IIS MMC > Default Website > Properties
Click on the "Advanced" button to view the IP addresses and Host Headers.
You should see your loopback address "127.0.0.1" and there should <not> be
any Host Header assigned to it. If you see a Host Header, then edit the entry
to remove it.
Do not touch any other configuration, click "OK" until you close the IIS
Console completely.

Then, from a commandline type the following to stop/restart the IIS service

iisreset

Your Server Reports and Backup should both be working fine.

Hi Hendrik,

Thanks for posting here! Also thanks for Tony' s input.

For your description, I understand that you have some problems to the
server performance report and status report on the SBS 2003 SP1 box. If I
am off base, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Before trouble shooting the issue, I would like to give a brief
introduction about the Reporting and Monitoring feature of SBS 2003.

As we know, there is not an file which contains the server usage
information in the SBS 2003 server, when the monitoring and reporting
wizard is run for the first time, a new instance of MSDE will be installed
and the monitoring database will be configured no matter what is selected
in the wizard, the usage report will be created by the querying the data in
the SBS 2003 and then compose a report to the user, it is an dynamic
report.

Generally speaking, the reports include statistics on Internet, e-mail,
fax, and remote connectivity. This information can help VAPs identify
potential problem areas, such as Internet misuse, a need for greater
network capacity, or a need for more modems for fax usage or remote
connectivity. This information will also help business owners see what
their employees are doing, and determine where they may be losing
productivity or what security adjustments need to be made.
There are two formats for the Server Usage Report: Basic (Web and e-mail)
and Detailed (Web, e-mail, remote connections and fax). The date range for
the current report is shown, and a button named Create New Report on the
upper right allows you to create a new report. A link named Definitions on
the upper left will bring up a list of definitions for the report
(http://servername/monitoring/tabldefs.html). There are four ways to view
the report:
1. E-mail (through the bi-weekly server status reports)
2. Intranet (through http://servername/Monitoring)
3. Internet - Remote Web Workplace
4. Monitoring and Reporting snap-in in Server Management console.
You can also view the Server Usage Report on the intranet by opening a
browser window and typing http://servername/monitoring/, which brings up
the Query.aspx page. Enter information for the date and time of the report
and whether you want a standard or detailed version. Click Create Report
and it will create a usage report on the fly based on the information you
entered.

Now let" s perform some tests to isolate the issue:
1. Please open IE and input URL: http://servername/Monitoring (note: please
change servername to your server name), Can you see the report content? If
not, please reproduce the issue and catch a screen shot for analyze.

To make a screen shot:
A. Press Alt + Pr Scrn to capture a screen shot.
B. From Start, go to Run, enter pbrush in the Open box, and then click OK.
C. Use Ctrl + V to paste the screen shot to the canvas.
D. From the File menu, go to Save and save as a JPG file.

2. Can you use other wizards normally in server management console? Such as
Fax configuration console, RRAS wizard and so on. If not, please also
reproduce it and help me catch screen shots.

3. Can you access the Companyweb site successfully?

Also I would like to suggest you reinstall reporting component to make
thing go well. Please refer to following steps:

- Uninstall the SBS Monitoring component

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
2. Select Windows Small Business Server 2003 and then click Change/Remove.
The Setup Wizard appears.
3. Click Next to start the wizard.
4. On the Windows Configuration page, click Next.
5. On the Component Selection page, in the Action column, change Server
Tools to Maintenance, change Monitoring component to Remove, and then click
Next.
6. On the Component Summary page, click Next.
7. Click Finish.

- Uninstall Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (SBSMONITORING)

In Add or Remove Programs, select Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine
(SBSMONITORING) and then click Remove. A dialog box appears. To confirm
that you want to remove, click Yes.

- Delete Registry Keys

1. Delete
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SmallBusines sServer\Monitoring
2. Delete
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\SBSMONITORING

- Delete IIS Virtual Directory

1. Open IIS, expand servername, Web Sites, Default Web Site
2. Delete Monitoring

- Rename Folders

1. Rename C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$SBSMONITORING to
MSSQL$SBSMONITORING.OLD
2. Rename c:\inetpub\monitoring to monitoring.old

- Install the Monitoring component

1. In Add or Remove Programs, select Windows Small Business Server 2003 and
then click Change/Remove. The Setup Wizard appears.
2. Click Next.
3. On the Windows Configuration page, click Next.
4. On the Component Selection page, in the Action column, change Server
Tools to Maintenance, change Monitoring component to Install, and then
click Next.
5. On the Logon Information page, click Next.
6. On the Component Summary page, click Next.
7. Click Finish.

And then try to test, how about the result?

Hi Hendrik,

Thanks for your information.

For the error information:

Security Exception
Description: The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed
by the security policy. To grant this application the required permission
please contact your system administrator or change the application''s trust
level in the configuration file.

Exception Details: System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the
permission of type System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission, System,
Version=1.0.5000.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089 failed.

Based on my research, the issue should caused by permissions. Please follow
below steps to try to resolve it:

I. Please ensure "Local Service" and "Network Service" has the following
permissions of the folder:

The folder: %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322
- Local Service Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, and Read permissions
- Network Service Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, and Read
permissions

The folder: %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\Tempora ry ASP.NET
Files
- Local Service : Full Control permission
- Network Service : Full Control permission

II. Please check the following registry key and verify it:

The value of "Current_NameSpace_Catalog" should be "Namespace_Catalog5",
you can find the registry key in the following:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2\Pa rameters

III. Please check the setting in IIS:

1. Open IIS snap-in.
2. Go to Default Web Site/Remote.
3. Right click Remote and click Properties.
4. Click Directory Security tab.
5. Click Edit under "Authentication and access control".
6. Make sure that only the "Integrated Windows Authentication" is checked.
7. Click Edit under "IP address and domain name restriction".
8. Make sure that "Granted access" has been selected.

And then please restart IIS services and then check if this issue persists.

Please note that after we run the Monitoring Configuration Wizard to reset
performance and usage settings, the original performance and usage data
will be removed. The server will start to collect new counter value from
the beginning. It will take more than 24 hours so that the report can be
generated.

Both correct.

That is exactly what it says.

Again, the web-access is not the real important thing, if the reports are
correct as emailed, I'll be happy. But the empty reports are of no use.

You can do follow steps to reset performance and usage settings:

NOTE: After doing the following steps, the original performance and usage
data will be removed. The server will start to collect new counter value
from the beginning.

1. Open Server Management console, navigate to 'Monitoring and Reporting'
snap-in. In the right panel, click 'Set Up Monitoring Reports and Alerts'.

2. In the wizard, click 'Next'->Select 'Reinstall monitoring
features'->Select the options if you want to receive the report e-mails.
Check 'View the usage report in Server Management' option. If you want to
receive the usage report e-mail, also check the option below->Add the users
which you allow them to view the usage report to the authorized
list->Select the option if you want to receive the performance
alerts->Click 'Finish' button to complete the configurations.

3. After doing the above steps, the performance and usage data will be
reset. Please wait for 24 hours and then you will see the reports through
the Monitoring and Reporting console.

Does the page try to load some assemblies over a UNC path?
If so, you need grant trust permissions to those assemblies in
Administrative Tools->.NET Framework 1.1 Configuration:

Go to Runtime Security Policy->Machine->Code Groups, add a new group in
LocalIntranet_zone.
Choose URL as the condition type and input the path of assembly as:
\\hostname\folder\assemblyname.dll or
file://hostname/folder/assemblyname.dll .

thanks for the responses. Didn't solve my problem (yet, I hope), so here my
comments:

- there was no host header set for the default website, and I added the
127.0.0.1 without header just to be sure.
- I can however not access the Monitoring website via the browser. The error
message I get points to a .NET security issue. I copy the error message
further down. My detailed responses here after each of Jenny's questions:

error messages, so there

All wizards work fine, fax is operating without problems, same for internet
connection. I do not have automatic backup set up (I keep the backup medium
in a fireproof place, so have to do it manually), but the wizard also starts
fine.

Negative. As I wrote in my inital posting, I have done this about 10 times
now, using exactly those instructions (provided in an earlier posting of
mine by a colleague of yours; never got to a solution though, as my response
was a bit delayed due to a longer business trip to China).

Anyway, I did it again just so we get this out of the way: the
reinstallation did not solve the problem. (Actually, above screenshots are
made right after the reinstallation).


Back to: Any ideas? The Web-access seems to be linked to .NET security
settings, as I take from the error messages, but that's not too much of a
concern for me, as I do receive the reports via email, but they are just as
empty (exact same content) as in the attached "Server Perf.jpg" and
"Usage.jpg". Appreciate your support and ideas!

For your description, I understand that you have some problems to the
server performance report and status report on the SBS 2003 SP1 box. If I
am off base, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Before trouble shooting the issue, I would like to give a brief
introduction about the Reporting and Monitoring feature of SBS 2003.

As we know, there is not an file which contains the server usage
information in the SBS 2003 server, when the monitoring and reporting
wizard is run for the first time, a new instance of MSDE will be installed
and the monitoring database will be configured no matter what is selected
in the wizard, the usage report will be created by the querying the data in
the SBS 2003 and then compose a report to the user, it is an dynamic
report.

Generally speaking, the reports include statistics on Internet, e-mail,
fax, and remote connectivity. This information can help VAPs identify
potential problem areas, such as Internet misuse, a need for greater
network capacity, or a need for more modems for fax usage or remote
connectivity. This information will also help business owners see what
their employees are doing, and determine where they may be losing
productivity or what security adjustments need to be made.
There are two formats for the Server Usage Report: Basic (Web and e-mail)
and Detailed (Web, e-mail, remote connections and fax). The date range for
the current report is shown, and a button named Create New Report on the
upper right allows you to create a new report. A link named Definitions on
the upper left will bring up a list of definitions for the report
(http://servername/monitoring/tabldefs.html). There are four ways to view
the report:
1. E-mail (through the bi-weekly server status reports)
2. Intranet (through http://servername/Monitoring)
3. Internet - Remote Web Workplace
4. Monitoring and Reporting snap-in in Server Management console.
You can also view the Server Usage Report on the intranet by opening a
browser window and typing http://servername/monitoring/, which brings up
the Query.aspx page. Enter information for the date and time of the report
and whether you want a standard or detailed version. Click Create Report
and it will create a usage report on the fly based on the information you
entered.

Now let" s perform some tests to isolate the issue:
1. Please open IE and input URL: http://servername/Monitoring (note: please
change servername to your server name), Can you see the report content? If
not, please reproduce the issue and catch a screen shot for analyze.

To make a screen shot:
A. Press Alt + Pr Scrn to capture a screen shot.
B. From Start, go to Run, enter pbrush in the Open box, and then click OK.
C. Use Ctrl + V to paste the screen shot to the canvas.
D. From the File menu, go to Save and save as a JPG file.

2. Can you use other wizards normally in server management console? Such as
Fax configuration console, RRAS wizard and so on. If not, please also
reproduce it and help me catch screen shots.

3. Can you access the Companyweb site successfully?

Also I would like to suggest you reinstall reporting component to make
thing go well. Please refer to following steps:

- Uninstall the SBS Monitoring component

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
2. Select Windows Small Business Server 2003 and then click Change/Remove.
The Setup Wizard appears.
3. Click Next to start the wizard.
4. On the Windows Configuration page, click Next.
5. On the Component Selection page, in the Action column, change Server
Tools to Maintenance, change Monitoring component to Remove, and then click
Next.
6. On the Component Summary page, click Next.
7. Click Finish.

- Uninstall Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (SBSMONITORING)

In Add or Remove Programs, select Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine
(SBSMONITORING) and then click Remove. A dialog box appears. To confirm
that you want to remove, click Yes.

- Delete Registry Keys

1. Delete
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SmallBusines sServer\Monitoring
2. Delete
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\SBSMONITORING

- Delete IIS Virtual Directory

1. Open IIS, expand servername, Web Sites, Default Web Site
2. Delete Monitoring

- Rename Folders

1. Rename C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$SBSMONITORING to
MSSQL$SBSMONITORING.OLD
2. Rename c:\inetpub\monitoring to monitoring.old

- Install the Monitoring component

1. In Add or Remove Programs, select Windows Small Business Server 2003 and
then click Change/Remove. The Setup Wizard appears.
2. Click Next.
3. On the Windows Configuration page, click Next.
4. On the Component Selection page, in the Action column, change Server
Tools to Maintenance, change Monitoring component to Install, and then
click Next.
5. On the Logon Information page, click Next.
6. On the Component Summary page, click Next.

SSR doesn't allow you to customize the contents of the report other than to
specify additional logs to be attached. However, you can change the
schedule and who will receive the reports from the Monitoring and Report
snap-in, Change Server Status Report Settings shortcut
(%sbsprogramdir%\monitoring\mssbsssr.exe /configure).

Both Server Status Reports have five tabs containing configuration
information. The following is a breakdown of each tab and what
configuration options are included.

General
General contains the report name and description fields. If the report name
is changed here, the name of the corresponding task in Task Scheduler will
be changed automatically.

Content
Content contains selections for what type of information you want to
include in the report; performance or usage statistics, and what log files
to be attached with each report. The log files that are available by
default are Application Event Log, IIS Logs, SBS Backup Logs, Security
Event Log, and System Event Log. You can also attach additional logs by
specifying the log locations and their display name. All of the logs will
be compressed into a single .cab filed named Log.cab which will be attached
to the report. Any new logs created or updated since the last report are
included in the current report. If there are no updates to any of the logs,
only a status log, File Attachment Status.txt, is attached to the report.

For event log, SSR will always send the most up-to-date version of the
logs. SSR will copy the event logs from %windir%\system32\config, rename
them to AppBkup.evt, SecBkup.evt, and SysBkup.evt, and then copy them into
%alluserprofile%\Application Data. They will be used to create the .cab
file. For IIS logs, SSR will use the
%systemroot\system32\LogFiles\W3SVCX\EXxxxxxx.log from all virtual servers
to create the .cab file. For SBS Backup Logs, SSR will use the backup logs
from the %sbsprogramdir%\Support\Backup Logs folder.

Hello Hendrik,

Besides your Server Reports, check to see if you can access your Backup
configuration, too (through the SBS management console).

If both aren't working, your problem is likely because somehow a Host
Header
was assigned to your loopback address.

Resolution:
Open your IIS MMC > Default Website > Properties
Click on the "Advanced" button to view the IP addresses and Host Headers.
You should see your loopback address "127.0.0.1" and there should <not> be
any Host Header assigned to it. If you see a Host Header, then edit the
entry
to remove it.
Do not touch any other configuration, click "OK" until you close the IIS
Console completely.

Then, from a commandline type the following to stop/restart the IIS service

iisreset

Your Server Reports and Backup should both be working fine.

This is my 2nd attempt to find a solution to Server Performance Report and
Server Usage Report being empty. While looking through the newsgroups, I
found at least 10 other postings on this topic without final solution, all
from the last few months. Seems like something broke around SBS2003 SP1.

PLEASE: Read this to the end, because a lot has been tried already. Esp.
all
KB-articles etc. won't help here, been there, done that, so I am looking
for
some creativity!!

Here is the report I got this morning (well, except fot the Windows SBS2003
logo, which didn't paste into this text, and with some blank lines removed):

So the report simply stays empty. Similar for the usage report, it gives
some lines which look like templates (such as \L# etc.), so also no content.

System is SBS2003, all updates, SP1, did a full reinstall of the system
(erase C:\Program Files and C:\Windows and C:\Inetpub and started from
scratch).

I have also removed Monitoring per instructions, reinstalled, reinstalled
monitoring, reapplied service packs, reinstalled MSDE, done it all again,
you
name it. No luck!

BUT: "mssbsssr.exe -perf" does update the performance counters (after
Monitoring reinstall, the counters are not set, as you can see if trying to
change the alert levels, and once mssbsssr is run, the counters are there).
Also, "mssbsssr -C:Server Performance Report" does send the report, I have
it
in my email every morning.

There are no error messages in the event log, none in the logs of MSSBSSSR
or on the database access (tried this as well: if I stop the SQL service, I
do get an error message that mssbsssr is not able to connect to the
monitoring database, so looks like it does connect).

I somehow have a suspicion that everything is working, just when mssbsssr
assembles the report, it uses a blank or corrupted template. Just cannot
find
the template on the system, and there seems to be no documentation around
for
this "mssbsssr.exe" program.

Does anyone have additional insights into the workings of this report
generator? Maybe someone at MS actually knows how it assembles the data and
thus why the reports stay blank, if everything else works? Would greatly
appreciate creative thinking with a solution!!

Hi Hendrik,

Also please check other build-in sites (the Companyweb site, RWW site),
does its work well?

Additionally, please double check the Monitoring virtual directory has
pointed to appropriate location. You can refer to the following steps to
check:

1. Open IIS snap-in.
2. Go to Default Web Site/Monitoring.
3. Right click Remote and click Properties.
4. Click Virtual Directory tab.
5. Please ensure you have input proper Local Path (C:\Inetpub\Monitoring)
and also ensure the checkbox of Read, Log Visit and Index this resource are
checked.
And also ensure Application Settings as follows:

--Application Name: Monitoring
--Execute Permissions: Script only
--Application Pool: DefaultAppPool

Please double-check the default application pool in IIS. To do so:

1. Open IIS Manager.
2. Go to Server/Application Pools/DefaultAppPool.
3. Right click DefaultAppPool and click Properties.
4. Click the Identity tab.
5. Make sure the application pool is using "Predefined: Network Service" as
its identiry.
6. Run IISReset command and check whether the problem persists.

If you still can not access the monitoring site, I would like to introduce
you use FileMon tool to monitor the process. Please use the following steps
to capture data with these utilities. You will need to follow the steps
below to use the utility.

1. Please visit the following link to download and save the Filemon version
for your operating system from the following Web site:
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/filemon.shtml

- Download "Filemon (x86 - 76 KB) - you plan on using Filemon on
WinNT/2K/XP/2K3" if you plan to use Filemon on Windows 2000, Windows XP, or
Windows Server 2003.

2. Familiarize yourself with the Capture and Clear buttons below the menu
bar. You can alternatively use Ctrl+E and Ctrl+X.

3. Stop the capture and clear the current events. This will allow us to
capture minimal activity. There will be some activity that will be
extraneous, but that's okay. We would rather have to much data then not
capture the correct events.

4. Make sure your application is in a state where you are ready to
reproduce the problem (Open IE, and input URL: http://localhost/monitoring).

NOTE: In order to see minimal traffic from the utilities close all other
applications that are not involved in the test.

5. Click the capture button or use Ctrl+E to start capturing data.

6. Reproduce the problem (click "Enter" key to go to the monitoring site).

7. Stop the capture by clicking the 'Capture' button or use Ctrl+E.

8. Save each capture to a file, zip them up and send them to me for review.

Did that, I will send it to you per email (my news provider has removed the
thread by now, and I have not figured out a way to attach files to the news
access via microsoft.com, which I am now using).

For your current situation, please try to check the following settings:

1. Please compare the Web.config file in C:\inetpub\monitoring with a
working one. Do you have another fine SBS 2003 server box? You can mail me
the web.config file.

2. Please double check the default website to see if the default nature is
changed.

3. Please take a look at the following KB article to see if it helps.
