The service BITS doesn't start automatically

Dear All,
I had some problem with windows update with my Xp sp2. I resolved it by
starting manually the service BITS and the update worked properly. At
the end it asked to restart windows and after restarting I noticed that
the service is again stopped.
Now if i start the BITS service the windowsupdate works. But when i
restart the pc, the service is again stopped and the next windowsupdate
fails till i start again the BITS manually.
How can i solve the problem and avoid to start manually the BITS service
every time i want to update Xp?

Did you by any chance disabled the BITS service via msconfig?
