It appears that SP-1 IS, in fact, available for installation from
Windows Update and IS offered by Automatic Updates after all !
I got tied up on some other stuff and didn't do anything further with
this matter until a little while ago. Both computers have been running
in the meantime. I happened to look at the one that had NOT prompted
me about SP1 and, lo and behold, there it was: telling me that I
should install SP1 !!
Now, don't mis-understand me - I'm not complaining about what you guys
posted. I read the MS document you linked and it says what you quoted
above. But, geeze, I would think that Microsoft should have a little
better handle on how this all works.
FWIW, I let it install the service pack. It went without incedent and
the computer seems to still be running ok - although I haven't done
all that much with it yet.
