I finally got SP1 for Vista to show up. I am going to run a registry
clean up and defrag the hard drive and then install it. If I have
problems like I did the last time (SP1 made my system slow to a crawl)
then I will scream.

Do NOT use 3rd party Registry Cleaners!!!!!!!!!
Manually clean the Registry, or leave it alone!

If you ran a registry cleanup tool prior to installing SP1 the last time, it
was pretty likely the cause of the slow-down, and not the security pack. I
am with Mick on this one. You should only delete a registry key if you know
for a fact you do not need that key. Automated cleanup tools make mistakes.

Good.

Ugh! You are looking for trouble! Registry cleaning programs are *all*
snake oil. Cleaning of the registry isn't needed and is dangerous.
Leave the registry alone and don't use any registry cleaner. Despite
what many people think, and what vendors of registry cleaning software
try to convince you of, having unused registry entries doesn't really
hurt you.

The risk of a serious problem caused by a registry cleaner erroneously
removing an entry you need is far greater than any potential benefit
it may have.

The registry rarely - if ever - needs "cleaned up". Leave it alone.
Everything there is there for a reason. Any software that you uninstall
will delete its own keys.

Yes, but run the registry clean up AFTER the install also. It leaves behind a bunch of junk with all of those boots and reboots.

Not sure I agree. while that may be true of many of the registry clean programs, I use Registry Booster 2 from Uniblue and have for a long time in both XP and Vista. Makes a big diff in speed and stability and I've never had a problem. It does a full restore point before cleaning if you set it up that way. Otherwise it does a partial registry back up of just the changes.

The Service Pack Cleanup tool will do a better job at that. Just type
"vsp1cln" (without the quotes) in the Start Menu search box, you need admin
privileges. The tool can clear several hunderd MBs off your disk as well,
but you should only run it if you are not thinking of uninstalling SP1 at a
later point.
