Service Pack 2 After-install?

I downloaded the Service Pack and got it installed all fine and dandy but
when I restarted the computer to finish the installation of the 'pack, it
appears to be having some startup problems.

The os starts, and my background on my computer shows up. But it doesn't
respond, there is no desktop icons, no taskbar at the bottom, nothing.
However, the computer appears to be operating fine (if I use CTRL+ALT+DEL I
can still do things) but this lack of taskbar is perturbing. Ideas anyone?
