Hi there, I want to know whether I can use the XP SP2 CD I have (p/no.
X10-80291), which if I remember rightly I received with a PC magazine back in
'04 or '05, or does the CD E85-03129 that is the CD that Microsoft are
sending out now have updates added since the earlier disc was made? I am
helping a neighbour upgrade their PC and they are on dial-up, so the more
there is on the CD the better.
Thanks.

SP2 was released and has not/will not change.
The 85+ post-SP2 updates however, those must be downloaded sometime if you
plan on staying current. ;-)

Make your own patch CD...

Each month Microsoft releases that month's updates in ISO format:
January 2006-current
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913086

If you are more trusting:

AutoPatcher
http://www.autopatcher.com/

Windows Updates Downloader
http://wud.jcarle.com/

You can download each update manually - based off the KB Article number,
etc. That way you can back it up/burn a CD of them in case you need them or
use them to keep a slipstream/integrated (updated) Windows XP CD.

patches..)

You can see the critical (security and other) patches released for a given
month using the following:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms##-***.mspx

At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ##
with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month
abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches
for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by
the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be
fine) - note that future months will not work.

As an example...

December 2004's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms04-dec.mspx

March 2005's patches..
None released.. so that one will fail...

May 2006's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms06-may.mspx

January 2007's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms07-jan.mspx

Once you get on the page with each month's list of patches.. You can go to
the related KB articles and grab the appropriate files from there.

However - the link to the entire conversation is contained in the response
itself.

Welcome to the party - almost two years later. ;-)
(1 year, 11 months and 23 days... Give or take a day.)

That was posted on August 27, 2007 at 10:14PM - it's out-dated to say the
least:
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...61f3dbd0c60d2/
(Archived post in its entirety above)

At the time - that link was perfectly fine; however, in the 723 full days
that have passed between then and my response now - the site has obviously
been removed and parked. It happens - especially given the time that has
passed and the fact that the second replacement OS for Windows XP (its
namesake being in the web page link in question) has been released to
manufacturing by now - it is no surprise at all. *grin*
