Hello to you knowledgeable people out there, I am a 68 year old with just a
fair understanding of PCs and would appreciate your help. I purchased my PC
in 2002. It's running on Windows XP with Microsoft Works factory installed.
I have downloaded Service Pack 2 but unable to install, I keep getting the
message "The expected version of the product was not found on your system".
Microsoft pages are no help to me. I would appreciate any help .

You would appear to have downloaded the Office XP service pack2 - rather
than Windows XP SP2!!

What shows when you open System Properties??
What does that tell you your versions of Windows is?
If you go to Start|Run - and type "WINVER" into the box, and click OK - what
does it say the version of Windows is??

Before we go further down this road - I just read the OP again......
I'm embarrassed to admit that I misread the thing completely! - let's start
again! (I blame lack of nicotine - I gave up smoking last week <g>)

Works - or Works Suite??
There is a big difference - because Works does not contain any elements of
Office, so far as I know.
Which version of Works? (use Help|About for the definitive answer)

If Works, then use the product updates pages here
http://www.microsoft.com/products/works/downloads.mspx

If Works Suite - then you may want to see if you can use Microsoft Update,
or the Office Updates pages to get the correct updates.
http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/of...e/default.aspx
IIRC, the Office XP SP2 install had SP1 as a pre-requisite
However - SP3 is now out for Word 2002 (the latest version available for
Works) - and contains both SP1 and SP2, and so is better for updating
purposes.

If you are using Word 2000 as part of Works Suite, then SP3 is also
available for that. and should be installed

Once again Noel thank you for your response. I don't want to worry you unduly
but I quit the dreaded nicotine almost 30 years ago and my brain is still
trying to come to terms with it. However back to more serious matters,I run
Winver again and the numbers I came up with we're Version 5.1
(build2600.xpclient.010817-1148.) I clicked on the link
http://www.microsoft.com/products/works/downloads.mspx and I am afraid it's a
little above me. As I said in my original post,I am 68 and just about able to
find my way around a PC.

Hmm.
Laurence - you have more serious updating to do that just your Works!
Windows itself desperately needs to be updated to reduce the likelihood of
you getting stomped on by every passing virus.
What form of internet connection do you have? (Dialup? Cable? ADSL?)
What sort of security aids are you using?
(Firewall/Anti-virus/anti-spyware??)

At least you're using decent protection!
When was the last time you visited Windows Updates?
Do so, and see whether the Windows XP SP2 download is offered (I reckon it
should be, from the numbers you've shown)
If it is, then you have a decision to make
1) download the entire 240-odd MB XP SP2 installer for offline installation
2) order an SP2 CD from Microsoft (it's free)
3) use Windows Updates to download the XP SP2 stuff that isn't already
installed - I'd say this method is rather a 'last resort' (and I'm not sure
it's even possible any more)
4) see if you can borrow the SP2 CD from a neighbour or the local Library

While you're waiting for either the download, or delivery of the CD, you
should also download and run the Stinger, and Ad-Aware, because you may
already have a virus/spyware hijack.

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://vil.mcafeesecurity.com/vil/averttools.asp

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

download AdAware SE Personal Edition from www.lavasoftusa.com, install,
update, and run it to remove spyware, adware, and other such nasties from
your system (it tends to look for slightly different things to MSAS - and I
prefer it anyhow<g>).

Let me know how you want to proceed!

Noel, to say I am grateful would be an understatement. I very much appreciate
you finding the time to provide solutions to my problems. I have visited the
Mc Afee link and it's no longer available but I was able to download the
Adware SE from Lavasoft. I will also contact Microsoft to request a SP2 cd. I
don't know of anybody with one. Once again thank you for your help, I notice
your name appearing freqently on other posts offering your help and
expertise. I am confident that the people you offer advise to are just as
grateful as I am. Sincerely
--
Laurence
