is service pack 2 necessary

I use XP professional service pack 1.
Now I am wondering if it is necessary to download SP 2. It seems it is all
about security and not about improving your pc's performance.
Am I right in this?
Furthermore, I tried installing SP2 and get error 0X800706BE (whatever that
means). Underlying motivation to install SP 2 is that I want to buy the iPod
Nano and it requires (so my dealer tells me) SP2 :-s
Any comments appreciated.
