Odd indeed. Be sure you have a firewall on at all times. If you have nothing else, set & use the XP firewall.
What's more odd is you could not connect to any websites. I'd have rechecked all of the ISP-related & all the TCP-IP related settings in Windows & IE.
What make model of modem ? and is this on dial-up internet service?
How & where did you get SP2: on CD, on-line at Windows / Microsoft Update, or ?
2 basic tips: Do a thorough check for malware.
