service pack 2 prevents me from getting onto sites.

I have just installed service pack 2 for xp and have encountered a few
problems. One is that the firewall keeps disabling. The second is that though
my modem will connect to the service provider my internet explorer will not
connect to any sites whether the firewall is disabled or not. I have had to
restore previous settings to start again and i am no longer runnig with SP2
installed. Any ideas please.

Odd indeed. Be sure you have a firewall on at all times. If you have nothing else, set & use the XP firewall.
What's more odd is you could not connect to any websites. I'd have rechecked all of the ISP-related & all the TCP-IP related settings in Windows & IE.

What make model of modem ? and is this on dial-up internet service?
How & where did you get SP2: on CD, on-line at Windows / Microsoft Update, or ?

2 basic tips: Do a thorough check for malware.
