Service Pack 2 Registry Update Problem

When I try to apply service pack 2 it tried to backup the registry. It gets
half way and it fail with an error of access denied. I went to the registry
keys it is trying to backup and it has no permissions. When I tried to add
it, it failed because I had inadequete permissions. I am logged in with admin
rights. I even tried going through safe mode and logging in as the
administrator to apply permissions and it still failed. Any ideas anyone?
