Service Pack 2 Set up error

I have a PC which had a problem downloading service pack to - it failed to
start after loading sp2 - so reformatted, lost all work. Up until now, I have
delayed installing SP2 - Purchased the disk.

In running the sp2 set up, I get an error:

Service Pack 2 Set Up Error
A component's file does not match the varification information present in
the component manifest.

The only option is OK and this activates the removal wizzard.

Everything on the PC is genuine - what does this refer to? and what action
may I take to rectify the problem?

Have I installed Microsoft updates in the worng order by suppressing SP2 or
am I missing a critical download.

Any thoughts?

Try downloading SP2 for Windows XP manually (again) and execute it while
*no* applications are running in the background:

Fine - and don't forget to directly move to the Windows Update site to
let the Important/Critical Updates load and install.
