Service Pack 2 for XP

everytime i try to install service pack 2 for windows XP it stops midway
through installing the files. After succesfully backing up files the process
gets stuck on the instal the un backup the files and tells me to restart my
computer and try again. I would really like to install this service pack can
anyone help figure out why it always stops. thanks

I had to reinstall XP, remove Symantec/Norton System Works, add all the
accumulated updates, and then load SP2.
