SERVICE PACK 3 ERROR CODE 57E

Three updates constantly fail. The help sites give me no steer how to fix.
Any bright ideas out there. i am no expert.

What "three updates"?
I could *assume* (by your subject) that you have Windows XP SP3... But...

thanks for your interest. I am running Vista. The three updates were for the
Office 2003 SP3, published in June; an update for Office 2003, published in
Feb; and an update for Outlook 2003 Junk mail filter, published in Sept. They
all arrived together last week, and while they appear to have downloaded,
they will not instal, either separately or together. Does this offer any
clues?

Have you tried leaving the office installation CD in the installation drive
prior to installing the updates?

Can you manually download and install the updates?
