Error message when you try to install a service pack in Windows XP:
"Windows has detected that one or more protected core system files
(kernel) on your computer have been modified"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/327101
" This behavior may occur if the computer has a modified version of the
Ntoskrnl.exe file that uses the /KERNEL switch in the Boot.ini file.
This condition may exist because the computer has a third-party program
installed that customizes the graphics that are displayed when your
computer starts. Third-party programs that can cause this condition
include the following:
* BootXP
* LogonUI Boot Randomizer
To resolve this problem, you must remove the third-party program that is
causing the problem. "
Does the above condition exist ... eg. is there a 3rd party program that
customizes graphics installed ?

You can download the complete standalone SP3:
Windows XP Service Pack 3 x86 (32bit)

*Save* it, then do a clean boot of XP to eliminate any interference by
3rd party software:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353
After the system has been clean booted, create a folder on the root
drive, the drive where WINDOWS is installed to, and name it SP3.
Now move WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe to the newly created folder
and run it from within that location.
