Service Pack 3 locks up when installing

I get so far thru the install then get an error box which reads as follows:-
77e15fd5
Failed to hook

Does anyone know what this means?

I checked out the phone help link...got thru to a great support guy in India!
We worked on the prob for over 2 hours on the phone and after he took
control of my 'puter using "easy access" software...we got SP3
installed...after scores of similar error windows (failed to hook) kept
coming up!

He had never heard of such a warning! He also suggested that there was some
conflict with my sound card (?) and directed me to a microsoft page
explaining some conflict with AMD processors (which i have)!!

Anyway...i have sp3 after much hand wringing and 3 hours of time!
