I purchased this laptop second hand and it came with windows 2000.I have
trouble updating service packs for windows xp.I can update all other updates.
It always says product key invalid. I went to microsoft to check the product
id# .They said it had a valid security sticker. They also said that it had
select license agreement and software assurance home use program and that I
had to pay a fee for their help. Now the product key # in my computer is
different from the one on the sticker on the bottom of the laptop. I gave
them the # in my computer. I don't have the software cd.thanks for your help.

You say the laptop came with Windows 2000?
But it has Windows XP installed?

Is the sticker for Windows 2000?
If so and you have nothing saying Windows XP, you most likely do not
have a legitimate Windows XP license.

Check this link and see if your Product ID is valid:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=326904
Right click My Computer
Click Properties
The Product ID is under "Registered to"

If your Product ID is invalid, see this link:

If you do not have a CD, you may not have a legitimate license of
Windows XP.

I have installed SP2 a couple of weeks ago and everything is working fine.
My question is: can I now uninstall all the old patches that are in my
windows folder?

You can safely delete the uninstall files and some others:
