Service Pack for XP downloads, verifies, then fails

While trying to update, the system appears to do everything correctly. It
downloads, then begins to verify, and then I get a message stating the
updates were unable to be successfully installed, Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Please halp

Look for file WindowsUpdate.log in your C:\Windows folder ( or it may be C:\WINNT on your system).

Use Notepad or Wordpad to open & view contents. Scan down to the very bottom. Look at the set of lines for that last session-date.
Do you see lines with "Error" and some text with "fail".
Copy the set of lines for that last session-date & paste back into a reply in here.

Are you looking at the right log?

Maurice pointed you to the one without the space between the two words.
The one with a space between the two words would likely end about then.
It would from before you installed XPsp2 and would also indicate that you never
visited the Windows Update Catalog since then.

Alternatively, you could rename the old WindowsUpdate.log, retry the problem scenario
and then see if that creates a new WindowsUpdatelog.

Is this pc using a proxy server?

This windows update run ---- did you force a visit to Windows Update website, or was this from Automatic Updates?

If you are in a company-networked environment, contact your network / system administrator.

This pc is a stand alone. I tried to network it in the past, but wasn't able
to. This is a home pc. I typed in commands to display proxy server and there
is none.

I have been involved with some threads which were also showing that SID problem.
Search for 800704DD using the web interface search tool to read them if you're interested.

So far the best suggestion seems to be from Torgeir Bakken [MVP]
to use the secpol.msc tool to verify user rights.

Otherwise my usual suggestion has been to use WU or AU simply to find out what
updates they offer and then use the WU Catalog to download them from and
install them separately. That way any permissions problems will all be associated
with your account only and you won't have to try to guess which account is being used
for any of the other operations or why they are failing.
