I've tried to install service pack2 a couple of times now and each time it
fails midway because of some problem with the registry back up....the last
time it said that HKCR\CLSID\{83D4679F-B6D7-11D2-BF36-00C04FB90a03} could
not be backed up to file C:\WINDOWS\$Nr Service Pack Uninstall $\reg00870
or something to that effect (letter cases might be off).

HELP ME!!!!! And please type slowly, because I'm not all that keen on
computer lingo or their functions.

Thank You

If you check out the Windows Update website you will find specific
instructions for the preparation of your system for installing the Service
Pack 2 update. Among these are making sure your computer is free of any
viruses, spyware or other malware, running a defrag, clearing out the
internet cache and many other steps.

"angiedmann",

I am sorry you are running into this issue. I will try to
help you. I have installed XP SP2 many times without
taking any precautions at all, so please do not despair.

The uninstall of the SP2 apparently did not work. Windows
XP Service Pack 2 gives you an option at the beginning of
the install asking if you wish to backup your current
installation so that you could uninstall SP2 in the
future. To minimize the trouble you are having, choose
the "Do not backup" option.

The installation should proceed normally. Please let us
know either way what happens with your XP SP2 installation
and I will be checking if you need any further assistance.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]
