Service status hangs at "stopping"

I have a Windows 2000 server. When I attempted to change the startup for the
Windows Updates to manual or disabled and stopped the service it was then
that the service just hung in the "stopping" status.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Just to let you know that I figured it out....an issue with Java and the APC
software
due to expiration of the Sun Java Runtime Environment certificate.
