when i try to install sp1 for vista i keep getting an error code 80240016,

The Subject line states that SP1 for Vista can not be downloaded.
The body of your message states that SP1 will not install.

QED: Which is it ... a download or installation issue ?

If it's an installation issue, see this and try the FixIt:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946414

You can download the FixIt, save it, and then run it with the browser
closed, if desired.

Error message when you try to install updates from the Windows Update Web
site or from the Microsoft Update Web site: "0x80240016"
