Can some explain in LAYMANS terms how to set up a static ip address in vista
and are there any bad implications in doing so?

The reason is I live in the UK and wish to join a UK based internet
forum/club but they will only accept UK based ip addresses which apparently
mine is not.

Depending on your internet connection, if you set a static IP you'll no
longer have access, how are you connected?

I don't think you can get a static IP address from Orange. You can get one
with more expensive ISPs, like Demon.net.

It's very unusual that this forum will not accept members from people with
dynamic IP addresses. I suspect that the activities of the group is pretty
dodgy!

I am connected via a speed touch usb via Orange internet. Below is actually
the reply I received from the forum I wished to join. I have emailed Orange
but it generally takes about a month to receive a reply with usually
consists of going to online help, which I have already done.

"Thank you for contacting Bingo Night Live. Our registration is only
supplied to users with IP addresses within the UK. If you are a UK
user, you may be affected by geographic blocking if your internet
service provider (ISP) uses servers outside the UK.
You will need to contact your Internet Service Provider who can advise
you on how to set up a static IP address located within the UK.
Due to confidentiality issues, we are not permitted to see your IP
address. It is therefore up to your ISP to provide you with a viable
IP address which is verified on the ripe database.
We are very sorry that we cannot assist you further"

Do you honestly think that an ISP is going to go out of their way to provide
you with a static WAN/Internet IP that is pointing to a foreign network
(foreign meaning an IP that is not part of your ISP's network)?

I doubt if they are going to do that. <smile>

In layman terms, your ISP is not going to give you any IP static or not
static that is going to allow your machine to make contact with another
network that's not part of the ISP's network. It's not going to happen,
particularly so for an ISP that is providing services for the home user
sector.

What you need is an ISP in the UK where you can make contact and use the
ISP's services worldwide, like EarthLink in the US. I can be anywhere in the
world on any continent with a broadband connection and make contact with
EarthLink.

Some ISP providers do allow one to use a static IP that has been assigned to
the ISP's network, and it will allow its customer to access the Internet
using a static IP as opposed to a dynamic IP. I have used a static IP when
AT&T was my ISP, and it was the case where I was running a WEB server,
which should never have its IP changed so any one worldwide could make
contact with the Web server with no risk of the IP ever changing.

You need to be creative to make contact with something in the UK based on
you using a IP in the UK if you are not in the UK, because your ISP is not
going out of their way to provide you an UK IP.

You might be able to find a business classed ISP in the UK that will give
you that static IP.
