I get a "invalid DN syntax" when using setspn -L domain\username on certain
accounts, but not others.

on these same accounts that do not work with setspn -L; they do work with
adding a SPN. it responds "updated object" and then through LDP.exe I can
see that indeed an SPN has been set.

thanks

Verify that when registering the spn the CN doesn not include \ or ,.

To do this go to AD and find the account.
Right click the account and click rename. Change the name in any way and then the Rename User popup will appear. In the popup change the Full name to exclude the characters mentioned.
