Is it possible to set an enviroment variable for a Standard User
Account? If so, how is that done? Do you use the System Control
Panel?

Thanks for your help,

Chris

If you mean "can a standard user set an environment variable", I don't know
for sure if you can, but I would think you could.

CP -> System and Security -> System.
Select the Advanced tab and click on Environment Variables near the bottom.

It ain't easy. The interface sucks.

Oh - and there's a message that you must be logged on as Administrator to
do most of the changes on that panel, so learn how to do that.

Hi, Chris.

Have your Standard User open a Command Prompt window and use the Set
command.

(It helps if your user can remember the old DOS commands. Most of them
still work in Win7's Command Prompt window. As usual in this window, just
type the command followed by /? to see a mini-Help file listing switches and
parameters available with the command. For example: set /? )

I'm not sure if this sets environment variables for ALL of Win7. If you hit
a snag, post back and someone (maybe not me) should be able to help.

Variables set in this way will only apply to that one command session.
As soon as you close the window, the variables will revert to their
original values or disappear. If you want the variable to persist you
have to set them in the Advanced System Settings applet.
