Setting Up A Clustered Server 2008 Print Queue

Does anyone have any good guides to setting up a Clustered Server 2008 Print
Queue?

One of the requirements for this print que is that each printer needs to
include drivers for Windows XP/Server 2003, Server 2008, Server 2008 X64.

I haven't been able to get this to work and calling up and creating a case
has lead to 4 or 5 wasted hours trying to get to the correct team.

Please Help!

You need two drivers with the same name for each device, one 32bit and one
64bit. Most print drivers written for Server 2008 32bit will work with the
XP and Server 2003 clients. The major issue you have with 32bit and 64bit
print drivers are the names. All vendors know that the names must match for
a 32bit client to download the 32bit driver from a 64bit print server but
with some of the newest devices the 64bit driver is not released at the same
time the 32bit driver is released.

What exactly is not working?

I have this working for a number of devices from these vendors.
Canon
HP
Lexmark
Ricoh
Xerox

Alan,

I just know that when I tried to get everything setup, it more or less
bombed my cluster with messages about errors. We had to stop the print spool
to get these messages to go away.

Does anyone have a setp by step guide on how to get a print queue in a
cluster setup? I know the basic steps, but when it comes to adding additional
drivers for different OSes I have problems.

I tried calling and creating a ticket on this, but was routed to the wrong
team, and they did not help in trying to get me re-routed to the right team.
I just ended up closing the case and came here.

In all honesty I would like to see something with step by step instructions
from the very begining, just to make sure I am doing everything right. Even
if you can provide me with some rough instructions, I can write my own
detailed guide and post it on my website. Right now I just need some base
instructions to get started.

Thanks!

the print drivers need to be signed to add them to the cluster but there are
ways around this. I find the easiest way to add 32bit driver files to x64
targets is to use a 32bit client to remotely (it's all remote for a cluster
anyway) add the print driver to the target.

If you are trying to add Lexmark drivers you will need a fix in the core OS
setup binary

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948720
You cannot install device drivers in a Windows Server 2008 cluster
environment if the drivers contain LZ-compressed files

Alan,

I am getting two problems....

1) When I try and add the driver for different versions, it gives me the
error "Unable to install HP LaserJet 2430 PS, Type 3 - User Mode, x86 driver.
Access is denied.

2) On the cluster server i get a interactive services dialog detection
message with two errors that say...
a) Function address 0x722c2a10 caused a protection fault. (exception code
0xc000005) Some or all property pages may not be displayed

Are you trying to upgrade the print driver?

Give me the rundown on the node configuration? Specifically are the nodes
Server 2008 x64 or x86?

When you are installing the print driver from a remote x86 machine, what OS
is this machine running? I'm assuming you confirmed you are logged onto the
x86 client with admin privilege to the cluster nodes.

Alan,

I am just trying to intially setup the print server and drivers.

The node configuration is two Server 2008 x64 nodes they are using some
iSCSI storage and fun things like that.

I tried installing the driver from a Server 2003 x32 machine and that just
didn't work at all so I tried it from a Sever 2008 x32 machine and that did
work, but threw all those errors. I am logging in as a admin to all these
machines I am testing on.

Is it possible to have you help me setup the cluster and do a webex or
something? I tried calling up support, but they just routed me to the wrong
team and refused to move my case. I would be more then willing to open a
case, but I would like help from an expert and not just a generalist.

I do not know what webex is.

I have Server 2008 R2 x64 clustering setup on iscsi and my 32bit Server 2008
cluster also uses iscsi.

You will need to be admin in Server 2008, the Power Users account was
removed from the spooler for security reasons.

If the driver is package aware, you cannot use XP and Server 2003 to install
the drivers. I'm seeing more and more package aware drivers coming from HP
and Xerox.

send me a screen shot of the failover manager snapin with all the data
expanded + and the focus on the spooler service resource
