Maybe OT here?? I have a security DVR that I want to access from "outside".
If the DVR server is assigned a static IP of 123.456.7.8 and is assigned
port 2009, I am not sure what address (IP) to use. My setup is a cable
modem, linksys router, the DVR connection is to one of the router ports, my
computer uses another router port. I can view/operate the DVR on the
internal network with IE. Would my IP address xxx.xxx.x.x:2009 be right and
would I have to do some port forwarding in my router.?? Newbe here. TIA

Yes, this is a group for Windows server setup issues. You should post future
questions such as this in microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web if you use
XP.

You'd set up the DVR with a static private IP, such as 192.168.0.10, on your
network. Then in your Linksys, you would open/forward port 2009 from WAN to
LAN (to that IP). Presuming you know your public IP, you can then access it
from the Internet - http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:2009 (there's a colon between the
address & the port). If you have a dynamic public IP from your cable
provider, you'll want to check out www.dyndns.com or similar, set up an
account & hostname, and download their updating software, so you can use
http://myhostname.dyndns.com:2009

Some DVRs use a proprietary Client Viewing Tool,...so you would have to use
it instead of a browser if that is the case. With ours the only thing the
browser interface does is give you a (very limited) configuration management
interface,...no viewing video, no recording control, etc. Other than that
everything else is the same as has be said.
